REF615 is a specialized feeder protection and control relay designed for transformer substations and industrial power systems. It provides reliable, flexible, and high-performance functionality. The device is used in various power system configurations, including radial, ring, and network distribution grids, as well as in distributed electricity generation points. REF615 is part of ABB’s Relion® product family and belongs to the 615 protection and control series, distinguished by its compact design and advanced sliding unit for directional protection.
The 615 series of relays have been designed to ensure compatibility and communication potential among transformer substation automation devices based on the IEC 61850 standard. This relay primarily serves as the main protection for cable and overhead line feeders in distribution grids. It can also be used as backup protection in applications where independent and redundant protection systems are necessary. Depending on the selected standard configuration, the relay can be adapted for the protection of transmission lines and cable feeders located in well-grounded, compensated grids, or isolated networks. In its standard configuration, the relay can be commissioned directly after application-specific settings are configured.
The 615 series relays support a range of communication protocols, including IEC 61850 with Edition 2 support, IEC 61850-9-2 LE, IEC 60870-5-103, Modbus®, and DNP3-based process communication. The communication protocol can be supported using a protocol converter if needed.
